Having graduated from the Parsons MFA program in 2018 and founded her eponymous label just a year later, Chinese designer Rui Zhou now splits her time between Shanghai and New York. Inspired by the ‘poetic elegance between skin and garment,’ her designs use layers of overlapping oval and circular cut-outs, to explore the duality of strength and fragility. Mixing knitted fabrics and dip dye technology she creates bodysuits, tops, sleeves and leggings, in delicate muted tones that both reveal and amplify the body.
Obsessed with the beauty of imperfection, Rui Zhou channels the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi to create designs that use asymmetric cuts and negative and positive geometric shapes in elastic fabric membranes to explore duality and the tension between body and garment. Using the latest knitwear techniques, dip-dye technologies and pearl interlacing, her delicate, translucent, form-fitting, multi-toned collection, both exposes and conceals, creating a human truth, that is both tender and potent, empowering the wearer with a new and confident femininity.
