Taking a progressive approach to heritage design, London-based label Stefan Cooke, founded in 2017 by Central Saint Martins graduates Stefan Cooke and Jake Burt, subverts English romanticism and male and female idioms to create an exciting and modern version of ‘British’ fashion. Drawing on personal memory and experience, coupled with rigorous research and viewed through a high fashion lens, the duo combine functionality and sexy silhouettes to create a refined yet seditiously playful vision of a quintessentially English masculine tradition.
Stefan Cooke’s collection is a disciplined, measured yet dissident vision of an unambiguous masculinity. Committed to silhouette and the rigor of construction, they reference British heritage and popular culture with their hallmark Fair Isle knitwear, lattice slashed cut-outs, confident outerwear and boldly worked denim. These themes are amplified, as jersey jumpers become scarves, skater-skirt knit dresses become the new twinsets, badges the new sequins, and capes the new T-shirts. Accessories including bags with retro silhouettes rendered in shearling, jersey tassels, and sheepskin aviator collars add to the effect.
