British-born with Jamaican heritage, Central Saint Martin’s graduate and lecturer, Grace Wales Bonner’s namesake label has garnered international acclaim since its launch in 2014. Drawing on extensive research and encompassing black literature, poetry, music and sociohistorical photography, she weaves together British and Caribbean narratives to create an eclectic Afro-Atlantic aesthetic. Using organic fabrics and her signature crochet, her rigorous and soulful designs are layered with self-aware references, from 70’s silhouettes and casual sportswear to lover’s rock and dancehall culture.
With a joyous use of cuts and silhouettes, stripes, checks, gradients and jacquards, this collection has a swagger and finesse all its own. From power track tops and pants in reds and greens, wool blend track bottoms, striped knit jumpers, short-sleeved sun polo shirts and rib-collar bombers, to the green and gold chevron two-piece, Japanese print blouse and sought-after Sory Sanlé tee, the cross-pollination of cultures and materials creates a jubilant homage that weaves together British and Caribbean styles.
