This top handle bag was first produced in the late 1950s with the code 0957. The small structured shape is crafted in textured brown leather and is complemented by a wooden handle and closure. Embossed in gold on the interior is 'Gucci' with the number 40—the identification number of the artisan who made the bag. This handbag was selected by the Creative Director and Vault archivists for its particularity, character and exceptional vintage condition, and it was reconditioned to the highest standard by in-house artisans. It has been given the number 89 | 21 and will arrive in tailor-made packaging. This rare and beautiful piece should be handled with exceptional care.
This handbag was created in the late 1950s, just as Gucci began to gain global recognition, and a version was worn by the main character in the 1962 film "L'Eclisse" by Michelangelo Antonioni.
During this time, once a Gucci handbag was finished and inspected, a discreet place was chosen and then hand-stamped in gold with the number used to identify the craftsperson who made the bag. Here, in faded gold, the identification number 40 is still visible as it continues to take part in this bag's story—forever connecting the wearer to its origins.
As soon as you hold a piece of the Vault, you begin to write a new chapter of its story—instituting a relationship, rather than an ownership, that will forever connect one owner to the next. As the years accumulate, every mark or crease is collected onto the surface, continuously altering the item’s appearance and making it completely unique. Imperfections should be expected and treasured as the journey continues for this piece.
