Having launched his first collection on Instagram, Charles de Vilmorin’s exuberant vision and experimental approach has propelled him into the fashion firmament. As much a fine artist as fashion designer, he puts illustration at the center, hand-painting his designs using bold, pulsating color with intricate overlays. Theatrical and anarchic, his audacious gender agnostic creations use exaggerated silhouette, counterpointed with fluid free-flowing lines. The pieces showcased on Vault use his recurring motifs of intertwined flora, fauna, eyes and faces, set against block color to create a bombastic, psychedelic effect.
Inspired by music, film and theater, Charles de Vilmorin begins his design process with a setting; an empty stage on which he imagines lighting, décor, the silhouette of characters and then finally the clothes themselves. For this fiercely unisex capsule collection, he combines multi-media disciplines, with an emphasis on pattern and color, incorporating his own drawings and illustrations of universal motifs like hearts and flowers, to symbolize joy and love. Irrepressibly theatrical, his use of pulsating primary colors, exaggerated shapes and bold silhouettes has created a libertarian, carefree statement.
